The skin as a reflection of underlying liver disorders

The skin is the largest and most visible organ of the human body; it can reflect various findings of systemic diseases, including chronic and acute liver diseases, which are associated with multiple dermatologic lesions as the main extrahepatic manifestation. Cutaneous manifestations are common but non-specific and can be found in different diseases; therefore, the skin functions as a window to our general health, hence clinical examination of the skin, nails and hair can allow proper recognition, early diagnosis and treatment of liver diseases and improvement of the quality of life and life expectancy of affected patients.
